Fictional History

For this project I generate false photographs that depict the past using an artificial intelligence image generator, and then put them up on social media. I do this to research the level of critical consideration people have when looking at images. The alteration of photographs has been practiced for over 100 years. One of the most famous photographs of President Abraham Lincoln currently used in history books was altered. How about this image of Oprah on the cover of TV guide in the 1980’s? Photographer and artist Jerry Uelsmann was a master at darkroom based photo manipulation in the 1970’s. With this project I am question the role photographs play in telling stories and the level of truth that can be expected from a photograph.

This series of images were generated using the Wonder app.
