"Gelumination" is a series of digital sculptures that merge the luminous allure of synthetic materials with the unsettling reality of environmental toxicity. These creatures, forged from materials like gelatin, plastic, petroleum, and industrial and radioactive waste, radiate a synthetic glow that contrasts starkly with their polluted origins. Set on the High Line pathway in New York City, this augmented reality experience brings the creatures into a landscape that straddles nature and industry—a reclaimed industrial rail line overlooking the polluted East River and the industrial sprawl of New Jersey.
The creatures of "Gelumination" stand quietly among the park's visitors—watching, waiting, ignored by the people who cannot see them but ever-present as harbingers of the consequences of humanity's disregard for the environment. Their translucent forms and luminous textures capture the tension between beauty and decay, a metaphor for the duality of creation and destruction in the Anthropocene. By situating these creatures in AR, I invite viewers to confront the invisible scars of industrialization and the cost of progress, re-imagining the High Line not just as a pathway of renewal but also as a reminder of what has been lost. "Gelumination" illuminates the tension between human development, environmental decay, and renewal.
